The prolonged QT interval--a frequently unrecognized abnormality.

چکیده
The clinical importance of the long QT interval syndrome lies in its association with malignant ventricular dysrhythmias which are usually amenable to treatment with either drugs or cardiac pacing. The QT interval extends from the beginning of the QRS complex (whether the initial component is a Q or an R wave) to the end of the T wave. It therefore represents the algebraic sum of the individual action potentials of the ventricular myocytes, including both depolarization (the QRS complex or QJ interval) and repolarization (the T wave or JT interval). The rapid process of depolarization is rarely sufficiently prolonged to make any clinically significant difference to the QT interval duration and the term effectively refers to changes in the duration ofrepolarization, that is the JT interval.

The Prolonged QT Interval and its Mortality Implication
The congenitally prolonged QT interval had a total mortality of 73% in one series of 203 patients.1 Unfortunately, the study group was heterogenous with regard to symptoms, QT duration and length of follow up which varied from several years to greater than ten. The average age at death was 9.3 years with the youngest being 44 days and the oldest 40 years. Since it was first described in 1957, t...
متن کاملDetermination of sensitivity and specificity of QT interval in ECG of diabetic patients for ndiagnosis of cardiac autonomic neuropathy
one of the important complications of diabetes mellitus that physicians pay less attention to is diabetic autonomic neuropathy(DNA) ,especially cardiac autonomic neuropathy (CAN).this has a poor prognosis and is accompanied by sudden death risk, recently several investigations that were carried out for CAN detection ,suggested that QT-interval prolongation in these patients is an important diagn...
متن کاملبررسی QT طولانی در کودکان مبتلا به کری مادرزادی: گزارش کوتاه
Background: Long QT syndromes (LQT) are genetic abnormalities of ventricular repo-larization, with an estimated incidence of about one per 10000 births. It is characterized by prolongation of the QT interval in electrocardiogram (EKG) and associated with a high risk for syncope and sudden death in patients. Type of this syndrome is association with congenital deafness. Our objective was to eval...
متن کاملProlonged QT interval in the infants of diabetic mothers
Background: The prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus is rising. Myocardial hypertrophy is the most common cardiac disorder in the infants of diabetic mothers, which hypothetically can cause fatal arrhythmias. This study investigated prolonged QT in the newborns of diabetic mothers in Afzalipour Hospital in Kerman City, in 2015. Methods: This case-contro...
متن کاملChanges in QT interval before and after hemodialysis
Background: Cardiovascular mortality and morbidity are high in chronic renal failure (CRF) patients. Increased dispersion of QT intervals is known to predispose to ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. This study was conducted to assess the effect of hemodialysis (HD) on corrected QT (QTc) intervals and their dispersions (QTd) in chronic hemodialyzed patients. Methods: Fifty-eight p...
